Yet another project that brought a new design and engineering challenge into my life! This time, the client simply wanted a replica of the White Drago Sword from the TV series Power Rangers Dino Thunder…
However, the challenge came due to them wanting the sword to be accurate to the in-universe weapon. Which means that the blade needed to be able to extend and retract on command.
Therefore, I needed to figure out the engineering behind a linear motor system, along with the ability to 3D print a functional rail system, all of which needed to fit inside the dimensions of a slim-line sword body. Without being fragile, or heavy.
Simple, right?
As with many of my projects, I used high-quality rechargeable lithium-ion batteries to power the mechanism. A USB-C port is stealthily placed to allow for recharging the cell, and a two-way switch is used so that the user has full control of both extension and retraction. Overall, a pretty tidy build, and a really great project.
